The News (click to listen)
A billion people died on the news tonight
But not so many cried at the terrible sight
Well mama said
It’s just make believe
You can’t believe everything you see
So baby close your eyes to the lullabies
On the news tonight
Who’s the one to decide that it would be alright
To put the music behind the news tonight
Well mama said
You can’t believe everything you hear
The diagetic world is so unclear
So baby close your ears
On the news tonight
On the news tonight
The unobtrusive tones on the news tonight
And mama said
Mmm
Why don’t the newscasters cry when they read about people who die
At least they could be decent enough to put just a tear in their eyes
Mama said
It’s just make believe
You cant believe everything you see
So baby close your eyes to the lullabies
On the news tonight
The song resonated with me at 20 because I could remember watching the local news and trying to reconcile all of the daily tragedies as a pre-teen/teen. Being conscious of this, we have always been accutely aware of what is on the tv, radio or discussed when our children are around.
Ellie crawls in bed with me every morning and we snuggle up together and talk to Ryan while he is getting ready for work. The remote flips us between Disney Junior and the local news for traffic and weather reports.
A few days ago helicopter coverage of a car fire made it on to the traffic report and just like that Ellie has had a horrible time trying to fall asleep at night. She asks a million and one questions about "what happens if..." and has woken up with nightmares of a fire in our house.
We have explained to her how smoke detectors work, that we have a security alarm that will contact the fire department. We have gone over escape routes, stop/drop/and roll and nothing seems to calm her nerves.
Have you had a situation like this with your preschooler? How did you overcome the fears?
Stopping by from the blog hop and saw I was already following thru GFC so today I followed on Facebook. I would be so grateful if you could follow me also on Facebook. I lost my FB followers due to an error but my blog designer has fixed it so that now my FB badge goes directly to my blog and vs. versa. Unless I get my fans back I won't be eligible for the good products to review. I don't really understand what FB has to do with your blog doing a review, but you have to do it so here I am going round and round again on the blog hops. If you just followed me within the last two weeks then you are fine. If it's been longer than I need you to come back by just when you get a chance. This is going to take awhile so you can take your time. Thank you and have a great weekend!

we had an episode with hannah and "ghosts". and i don't know where it came from because she was only 2 or 3 at the time and had never even seen anything (that i was aware of) on tv or in books referring to ghosts. but she was convinced there was a boy in her room and would refuse to go in there if the lights were out because "the boy" would get her. it even got to where it creeped ME out! we just did everything we could to reassure her that her room was safe. eventually, she stopped bringing him up....i think it also helped that chandler was born and then she really DID have a boy in her room after he moved in ;)
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm here from Madame Deals' Blog Hop! News is depressing. I watch 90% less than I did a year ago for just that reason.
ReplyDeletehad a nurse tell me today that she does not read newspaper or watch news because of it being too depressed
ReplyDeleteHad this with Liv & Izzie after the AZ shootings {Gabrielle Giffords}. Eventually they forgot about it, but it was several days of constant question & total angst on their part. I was just sure to answer their questions & encouraged them to ask them. I tried to answer them in the best parental vocabulary as to not make it more scary. After a few days, we were back to princesses & playdoh again.
