We moved from the city. The Big City as Ellie called it. To a small town in the suburbs.
We moved when Ellie was about 14 months old, in fact we signed the contract on her first birthday. We were all 'happy birthday we bought you a house twice as big as our cozy condo!'
Ellie went to Gymboree classes, swimming lessons and played soccer in our new area. When it was time to register for preschool, it was so funny when we recognized some of the families at the first preschool open house from Gymboree. What are the chances?
We ended up sending Ellie to the second preschool we toured {only kind of knowing one family} and also signed her up for dance classes.
Dance class is only an hour so Madeline and I usually hang out with the moms and other little sibs. So now here's when things get a little confusing.
I helped set up for the Fall Harvest at preschool with a mom who used to teach ballet at the Y and now teaches where Ellie goes to class. This mom knows one of the girls in Ellie's dance class.
Fast forward to the pumpkin patch field trip - dance class mom and ballet teacher mom are there together. Not only does Ellie go to dance with this little girl, but she is also at the same preschool, just in the afternoon class.
That night, we went to a Creepy Crawler Bug Hunt where the kiddos brought flashlights and hunted outside for bugs {so much fun!!} and two little girls from Ellie's class were there as well as a little girl she went to Gymboree with. Ellie didn't know what to do. She said that she was so excited that her 'stay at home friends' and 'school friends' were all at the same party.
Holy small town Batman.
In the city you can get lost in the crowd. You don't have to see people you know unless you want to.
Now? Now I'm scared to go to Target with my unshowered hair in a pony tail because I'm sure I'll run into Susie Smith from fillintheblank.
Obviously I knew we were moving to a small town, but it just hadn't been so....well, obvious until now.
I guess it's a good thing I like these people. ;)
How about you? Are you living it up in the big city or enjoying a more quiet, small town life? Are you happy with your choice?
i live in queens and my neighborhood is like a small town! if you go out looking like ass, its guaranteed you will run into someone you know.!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou know my answer... I miss city living! :)
ReplyDeleteis Jillian the ballet teacher? Where does she teach now? I promised Maggie she could sign up if we can get the "independance" thing down!
lol....try small town living in the town where not only YOU grew up, but your parents too. there is NO sneaking into town without makeup because you WILL see every single person that you know. every time.
ReplyDeleteby the way...i LOVE your header picture! that is absolutely adorable :)
ReplyDeleteWell, there is something nice about it (small town living). It's definitely great for the kids. We are somewhere in between. In the suburbs and certainly run into familiar faces all over the place. We love it :)
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with your new header! Too cute!
ReplyDeleteWe're in a suburb of a semi big city...it's okay but the traffic outside our neighborhood is horrible. Thank goodness our little niche feels like a small town. I can actually walk to the drug and grocery store. And believe it or not the family owned pharmacy has a soda fountain!
First of all, I love the new look(I just got one, too).
ReplyDeleteAnd second- YES! Living in a small town is crazy. I don't think I've ever headed into town w/o seeing someone that I know.
it's pretty amazing how intertwined lives can be! it seems like someone always knows someone else who knows you.
ReplyDeleteWe live in Los Angeles, about as big as it gets! But the area we live in is its own small town. I always run into people everywhere I go! I love that sense of community. We especially felt it when we were at the neighborhood public school down the street - we knew so many people in the neighborhood. But now we're at a charter school 30 minutes away so it's a bit different.
ReplyDeleteLOve Love the new header! What are the shoes the girls have on??? Are Ellie's clogs?? You know me..Obsessed much?! lol.
ReplyDeleteI defintely am glad we live in the suburbs. We do live near about 3 different suburbs that we regular and I love it.
I love the city. Lived there more than anyplace else in my entire life (we moved a lot). Planned to go back to the city when son graduated high school except... somewhere after he turned 11 I met my soulmate Alpha Hubby and he keeps taking me further and further into the country. With cows. But as long as he is there, I don't care where we live.
