Cloth Diapers - what am I missing?

It seems that everyone is talking about cloth diapers these days.  And when they talk, they are speaking a foreign language.  Bum Genius, FuzziBunz, G Diapers, Bummis and on and on.  There are soakers and scrubbers and it all seems so complicated.

I get the appeal.  They are eco friendly and safe on your baby's skin {especially after all of the Pamper's Dry Max scandal}.  But then there is the gross part.  Cleaning poop.  Rolling up the poopy disposable diaper and running it to the nearest trash bag is enough for me.  But to scrub?  No thanks.

It's also an investment.  Which wouldn't have been an issue 3.5 years ago but this late in the game doesn't seem worth it.

So cloth diapering mamas, what am I missing?  Is there a sense of accomplishment like you get when making baby purees?  There has to be something that makes scrubbing poop appealing!

  1. Nothing about scrubbing poop is appealing LOL However, I think once I started using them, that just became another thing I do routinely without thinking about it. Our main reasons for doing it (we are cloth diapering our son but didn't with our daughter) are environmental and financial. We use disposables at night, though!

  2. I did it with Laila for awhile. It was very tedious and I got tired of it.

  3. I would so have to hire a diaper service to pick them up. But then hubby would complain about the cost, then he'd start to wash them and that wouldn't last so we'd be right back with disposables!

  4. I'm right there with you. I have tons of friends who cloth diaper and they all do it for economical & ecological reasons as well. However, I used disposables for one very priceless reason - my sanity. I think, with as overwhelmed and emotional as I was after the birth of each of my kids, the thought of having to scrap/soak/wash one more thing would have totally put me over the edge.

  7. Followed you over from Peace, Love & Muesli...I've cloth diapered almost from day one and since I had never ever changed a diaper (disposable or otherwise) it wasn't hard because I never knew any different. That said I would probably not do it if I didn't have easy access to a washing machine. I have a few posts in the topic and would be happy to chat about it if you are interested, just email me shesuggests[at]gmail[dot]com!

  8. I have thought about trying cloth with Q b/c she has terrible diaper rash...but just can't bring myself to actually following through. Life is complicated enough with two babies!!
