As a friend said, I don't need to be the mom "wearing" two kids on her back while breastfeeding a third. And I also don't think pushing your child in a stroller is going to damage their psyche (like a recent NY Times Style article suggested). But, having free hands is a must with a newborn and a 2.5 year old and the old Bjorn wasn't cutting it.
The Bjorn was great for taking the dog on a quick walk when we lived in our city condo, but the thing killed my back didn't work past the infant stage. So I started researching Bjorn alternatives and came across an entire baby wearing society I had no idea existed. There are ring slings, Mei-Tai's, Moby and Sleepy Wraps, Ergos and many many more. Totally confusing and overwhelming.
I knew I wanted one thing that would do a bunch of different things. Doesn't everyone? So I narrowed my search down to the Moby and Sleepy Wraps. I ended up adding it to a registry and receiving it as a gift.
When I opened the package I was completely overwhelmed. Is this thing really just one looooong piece of fabric? How would I ever figure it out?
Well I practiced. I practiced with a really pregnant belly by putting one of Ellie's teddy bears in the wrap. I sucked at it the first time. And the second. But by the third time I was getting the hang of it and by then time Madeline came home I could do it without reading the directions at the same time.
Madeline was/is a very easy baby but even she had her fussy moments. The Moby Wrap instantly put her to sleep. I could do the dishes, take Ellie to the park, fold some towels - I could be productive! And the best part was it didn't kill my back!
So the Moby Wrap can do just about everything - you can wear newborns on the front, toddlers on the back, even breastfeed with your baby in it! It's pretty miraculous, actually. It's machine washable and in the six months I've used it still looks brand new.
It is a little more bulky than you would imagine but can easily fit in our stroller basket or back in it's little carry tote. It's under $40 and a great investment whether you are having your first or fifth baby.
A proud baby wearing daddy! Madeline is about 4 months old.
