A New Appreciation

When Ellie skins her knee(s) you would think the world is ending.  There are 'ouchie! ouchie! ouchie!'s screamed.  Tears enough to fill an Olympic size swimming pool are shed.  I thought 'that's my little drama queen' until...

I skinned my knee.

Dude, it HURTS.  It must be something you block out of your mind like the pain of labor {well, that's not totally blocked out of my mind but enough that I did it twice}.

When I was little and my sister or I skinned our knees, my mom would sit us on the counter and offer us a drink of water before anything else.  I always accepted and chugged until the glass was empty so I would feel better.  Then she put on some type of spray that was in a white bottle with a green lid and red on the label and a band-aid.

It wasn't until I was in college that I asked her why she always gave us a drink of water and she told me she did it because it made us stop crying.  Offering a drink is now my step 1 in the skinned knee process, too.  Thanks mom.

So while visiting Ryan's family we were swimming in the pool and I was down on my knees in the shallow end.  The bottom was rougher than sand paper and I got skinned.

OUCHIE OUCHIE OUCHIE OUCHIE!

Holy moly did it hurt.  And it hurt the next day.  And the next.  And a week later when I peeled off the scab it hurt again.

So here is my apology to my three year old - I am so sorry I ever minimized the pain of skinning your knee.  Whether you realized it or not {I'm betting not} I thought you were being just a tad dramatic.  Never again.  It hurts.  It really, really hurts.  And when you want one leg out of the covers and propped up on a pillow I will do it.  For at least the first two nights.

AND, I have a new remedy to give Ellie and share with everyone else in the world who gets or know someone who gets an ouchie.  It's called a Woopsie and it's made by Backcare Basics.

Our Woopsie arrived today and Ellie immediately asked if it could sleep in bed with her tonight.  Woopsies are cuddly and lovable and will be perfect then next time Ellie gets and ouchie....which I hope is a long time from now.  ;)

From the Backcare Basics website:
Woopsies to the rescue!! Fun, friendly, always ready to soothe life's little bumps and bruises. Six unique personalities, but they all like heat and cold. Warm in the microwave or chill in the freezer as the owie demands. Comfortable embroidered covers of super-soft, sustainable bamboo terrycloth. Premium whole Buckwheat Seeds filling. Machine washable cover. Ages 3+.

Our Woopsies have been specially designed to be heated in the microwave or chilled in the freezer for soothing temperature therapy. They are filled with whole buckwheat seeds. Buckwheat seeds are the fruit (or achene) of the buckwheat plant (fagopyrum esculentum). The seeds posses the special property of retaining transferring heat/cold for up to 30 minutes.

Woopsies are designed to be easy to care for. Their removable covers can be machine washed in cold and tumble dried low. Do not wash liner/filling!

After playing and cuddling with Zibble for a bit, we gave him a hug and stuck him in the freezer to be 'on call.'  I think our skinned knee protocol is going to shift - Step 1.  Grab Woopsie  Step 2.  Offer drink of water and so on.  ;)

Disclosure:  Thank you to Backcare Basics for sending us our Zibble Woopsie to review!  This review is our honest opinion and experience with the product.  No other compensation was provided.

  1. I just skinned my knee last week and you're right, it really hurts. I think I need a Zibble too.

    Happy Healing!
